- CEREALTO will gradually reduce the purchase of caged egg products in all its operations globally, with a commitment to reduce by 10% in 2023, 50% in 2024 and 100% in 2025 compared to 2020.
- The Castilian and Leonese agri-food company has been the victim of a US activist campaign that has also targeted other multinationals operating in Spain.
- Both European and Spanish regulations recognise caged poultry production as part of their animal welfare standards, which accounts for more than 70% of Spanish suppliers.
Venta de Baños, 24 March 2023. The agri-food company from Castilla y León is committed to gradually reduce the purchase of caged egg products in all its operations globally, with a commitment to reduce by 10% in 2023, 50% in 2024 and 100% in 2025 compared to 2020.
The company explains the corporate decision in the framework of sustainability: "As a socially responsible company, Cerealto has always been committed to responsible sourcing, including animal welfare. Our production is mainly based on cereals.
He adds: "Sustainability is a priority for Cerealto. Our entire value chain ensures food quality, ethics and integrity throughout the process, complying with each of the legal requirements established by Spanish and European regulations, both of which are the most demanding in the world in terms of animal welfare. We evaluate all our suppliers through these policies.
The reality is that egg products represent less than 0.26% of the total raw materials used by the company in 2022. In addition, the consumption of egg products from caged hens decreased significantly over the last four years, by almost 90% from 2019 to 2022.
This has not pleased US activists who, for the last two months, have been launching messages on social media harassing the company and its managers, denouncing the lack of information on the use of these products and their origin.
